Countdown to the Global Orchestra

Flights have been booked, itineraries confirmed, and students are hard at work preparing their pieces for the first ever Nord Anglia Education Global Orchestra which starts in New York on June 24th.

  • Global Orchestra

Our BISS Pudong representatives, chosen in April after a rigorous audition process both at school and before an international panel, are Arianna Pantalone (Year 9), Ji Woo Han (Year 8) and Joung Jin Kim (Year 6).

Joung Jin says it was the word “global” that prompted him to audition, explaining, “The word global was what attracted me. It means lots of diversity, different people and different knowledge. When they come together, this will make a fantastic show and we will learn, enjoy and improve ourselves in so many ways.”

And global this gathering certainly will be! Eighty-two students from Nord Anglia Education’s 35 schools around the world will gather at the Nord Anglia International School, New York for seven days of music and cultural immersion.

Ji Woo, Joung Jin and Arianna will take on quite different roles in the Global Orchestra and choir.

As the youngest piano soloist travelling to New York, Joung Jin has chosen Debussy’s Reflets dans l’eau for what will undoubtedly be one of his most challenging and exciting solo performances. However, he will also have the opportunity to perform with the choir, accompanying them in Jazz Cantate, described as “a marvelous blend of Latin and English text, canonic verses and jazz sonorities”.

Although Arianna says she found the audition process nerve wracking, she is excited to take up her role both in the choir and as a solo performer and the opportunity she has ahead. “It was quite exciting! For anyone auditioning next year, I would say, it’s a great opportunity, give it your best and, even if you don’t get in the first time, keep trying,” she enthuses. Arianna will not only perform with the choir for which Music Director Paul Wright has chosen a varied repertoire, but also has the chance to perform solo in a special event to be held on the rooftop of NAIS NY in the heart of East Village. Billed as “rooftop karaoke”, the evening under the stars will provide another opportunity to showcase the talents of several of the singers attending the Global Orchestra. For the event, Arianna has chosen Valerie.

An accomplished cellist, Ji Woo takes desk 1 playing Cello II and will spend most of her time honing the pieces she is currently preparing for the ensemble performance. The icing on the cake for Ji Woo, as she looks forward to her trip, is the destination. She says, “Personally, I’m looking forward to experiencing one of the most diverse cities in the world.”

Over and above their own practice and performance in New York, the students will also experience as much of the cultural life of the city as time allows. This will include a day of workshops in at the renowned music conservatory, The Juilliard School, encompassing not only music, but also drama and dance. They will also attend a Broadway play; for the younger students, Matilda, and for the older ones, The Curious Incident of the Dog in the Night, another great opportunity for Arianna who has studied this text in English this year. Taking them away from the stage for a day, a sightseeing trip is also planned, to introduce them to some of New York’s most iconic destinations and activities, including Central Park, Radio City and the Museum of Modern Art.

The Global Orchestra is also an opportunity for two young student journalists to hone their skills covering this amazing event. The students, from Warsaw and Houston, will report daily from New York and their coverage will be able to be viewed both on the Global Classroom and the school website and Facebook.
