Year 10 Newsletter

Welcome back Year 10 to your IGCSEs, and a warm welcome to our new students

Welcome to a new year at NAIS Pudong. Year 10 is a vital year in your child’s education and this fortnightly newsletter will keep you up to date with all the developments, achievements and events relevant to their educational success. As year 10 enter their IGCSE studies, they will face many exciting new challenges; through this newsletter I will communicate all you need to know. I would like to formally welcome our eleven new students in year 10 to their life at NAIS Pudong. Our new intake represents the truly international flavour of our student body. Our new students, from four different continents, have settled into school life really well. Being paired up with their student ‘buddies’ from similar backgrounds and mother tongues has helped them settle, as the picture (above) represents. We wish them well for their IGCSE studies and their new life at NAIS Pudong. The main focus of the first few weeks of year 10 is to settle students into the academic rigour of IGCSEs. There may be many questions and discussions about new subjects, teachers and processes of learning.

However let me assure you that the Secondary team at NAIS Pudong is doing everything to ensure a smooth start to the IGCSE course. The outstanding results of the IGCSE class of 2015 demonstrate the success of the students at NAIS Pudong, and the quality of the education they receive. Some highlights were: 90% A*-C grades—compared with 67% in UK 52% A*/A grades—compared with 21% in UK % A*/A in subjects—French 100%, German 100%, History 72% Year 10, the bar has been set… it is up to all students to be ambitious and aim to fulfill their individual potential. I look forward to sharing more exciting achievements and upcoming events with you as the year progresses.

Mr Joseph Dawson—Year 10 Leader

Joseph fights for China!

Joseph Zachary Chong - 10A (pictured above) recently represented China in the Japanese Karate Association international tournament. Joseph entered his third international karate contest and a 16 nation tournament; with fighters from places as far flung as Australia and Iran. Joseph was eliminated by a highly skilled Japanese fighter but is aiming to qualify for the upcoming World championships in Paris. Well done Joey, you did your school proud and we look forward to hearing of your upcoming achievements!

Welcome from Year 10 Tutors

I am thrilled to meet my new form, who have been very welcoming. They are a very caring bunch of students with a good sense of humour. I am looking forward to taking them through their senior years in NAIS. Ms Paula Alderson - 10A It's great to see how settled and enthusiastic 10B are and looking forward to a very positive year ahead. A huge welcome to 2 new students Zoe Schumann from Germany and Ticiano Gao from Argentina. They were well received by the whole class and they seem to be settling in very quickly thanks to the help from their buddies. Ticiano has already shown great ability in his Mathematics class where he collaborates very well with others and has really been helpful to work with the harder problems. I believe this will be a very productive year for this talented group. Mr Samuel Lukose—10B

Welcome back to my terrific group of crazy, wonderful, kind and deeply caring form class students. I look forward to another meaningful year with you all. A particular warm welcome to our new students: Youjin, Mira and Bill – you are fortunate enough to have joined a form group that is, frankly, one of the best in the universe, so I am sure you will have no problem settling in and being part of our zany family. A reminder to 10C that this year the Water.Org house point deal continues (last year you raised just over 2000rmb) – so let’s make an effort to donate even more this year. Mr Alan Pritchard—10C

It is my great pleasure to welcome you back to Form 10D for the academic year 2015-2016. We are joined by two new students this year - Desmond and Naser and their buddies Marcel and Ethan are already going out of their way to help them with every aspect of their school life. I would also like to take this opportunity to congratulate Ariana on her participation in the Global Orchestra in New York during the Summer holidays and I am sure she has learnt a lot working with other outstanding and like-minded musicians. I am looking forward to working with these lovely young people during the course of the year. Please feel free to contact me throughout the year with any concerns. Mr Bastian Tsui—10D

One final thing… Students in year 10 have started the year generally very smart in their uniforms and we hope this will continue throughout the year. Can we particularly draw your attention to the guidelines regarding jewellery, make up and nail varnish (please see the student planners for details), and also remind you that students with long hair (shoulder length or below) must tie up their hair during practical lessons such as PE, Art, Science or DT, or for any other activities where a teacher asks them to do so. Thank you for your support in helping us maintain these high standards.—Mr Joseph Dawson.
