Year 3 Week Ahead Information

An overview of the week ahead in Year 3

Information and Reminders

Thank you to all parents who attended the Academic Review Evenings. If you were unable to attend the evenings, please contact your child's class teacher to make an appointment at a more suitable time.

We look forward to welcoming our Year 3 students back to school very soon!

Don't forget our Chinese New Year Temple Fair this Sunday from 11am to 3pm.

Friday 5th February - Chinese New Year dress up day

Friday 5th February - School closes for the Chinese New Year holiday and will re-open on Monday 15th February

Don’t forget our exit point celebration next Friday 5th February! The children will be hosting milkshake cafes in the Year 3 classrooms. Come along and sample a delicious homemade shake!

Please have a look at home for any stray PE kit/ school uniform that your child may have brought home by accident. We are currently looking for a large number of misplaced items! If your child has lost anything recently, please take a look at lost property, near the main reception desk, in the first instance. Please also make sure that all items are clearly labelled with your child’s name and class.

English

In English next week we will begin with a grammar focus. The children will be learning the correct form of ‘a’ or ‘an’, understanding and applying where and when to use each. They will complete writing the chapters they began last week, with a focus on editing and improving their work. They will then begin to explore play scripts, in preparation for creating their own play script based on a scene from George’s Marvellous Medicine. To help with this, they will devise role-plays to act out each scene before writing their scripts. In guided reading, our focus will be on developing an interest and passion for reading by discussing a wide range of fiction, poetry, plays and non-fiction with their peers. They will have the opportunity to share and discuss their favourite books with each other.

Maths

In Maths next week, we will continue to focus on fractions. Having begun the topic this week, the children will start the week by finding fractions of amounts (e.g. find 1/4 of 20, find 4/6 of 30 etc.) These questions will be both written in number form and in worded problems for the children to solve. They will then learn how to identify and find equivalent fractions. Some children will have the use of a fraction wall to help, while others will learn how to use multiplication and division to find a common denominator to help. Developing this skill, the children will then learn how to order fractions. To begin with, the children will be asked to order fractions with the same denominator (e.g.  Put these fractions in order from largest to smallest: 2/10, 7/10, 1/10, 8/10). As their skills and confidence develop, some children will be given the challenge of ordering fractions with different denominators (e.g. Put these fractions in order from largest to smallest: 1/5, 7/10, 3/6, 3/5). To end the week, the children will put their new skills to the test by attempting to solve problems involving fractions.

Topic

In Topic next week, we will be completing the final preparations for our exit point! The children will be preparing menus, adverts and resources for the grand opening of our pop-up café. We hope to see many of you there!

As well as this, as Internationalists, we will be exploring why milk is scarce in some countries, and what we can do to help with this.

In Computing, we will be collecting data and investigating how we can use computer programmes to represent it.
