Letter from the Head of Primary - 4th February

We have had a super week in school this week celebrating Chinese New Year, but also the exit points for Year 3 and Year 6 topics. Throughout the week, our Mandarin teachers have been using their lessons to share Chinese culture and traditions, in particular Chinese New Year.

This was all brought together today where, as a Primary school, we have enjoyed a fantastic Chinese New Year assembly, where almost one hundred of our students performed for their peers. The assembly included the story of the Chinese zodiac, Chinese poems as well as a comparison of Chinese and Western festivals and celebrations. I was immensely impressed with all of the students’ spoken Mandarin, which they performed with confidence. A huge thank you to our Mandarin teachers for organising such a colourful assembly which truly conveyed what a special time of year this is.

Our Year 6 students also had a busy morning, sharing with their parents and their peers their exit point to their topic ‘Out of Africa’. The students presented their learning, which has covered the topic of evolution, in the form of spoken presentations, displays of their work and even QR codes which could be scanned on mobile devices. Again, the level of understanding from the students was exemplary as they disseminated what they had learnt to their parents and peers.

Tomorrow, Year 3 will be inviting their parents into school for their exit point to their topic ‘Shake it!’ This will involve the Year 3 students hosting their very own pop-up milkshake shops, where parents are invited to come and sample some of the delicious milkshakes the students have made as part of their learning. I, for one, can’t wait to go and visit!

Tomorrow also sees the culmination of our Chinese New Year celebration week, and we invite all of our students to come to school dressed in traditional Chinese clothes or the colour red. Donations of 10RMB are welcomed for our chosen charity Heart to Heart.

After the holidays we will be hosting our Primary Coffee Mornings. Based on parent feedback the topics for our next Coffee Mornings will be:

Early Year and Infants – 9.00am to 10.00am – Reading and Phonics

Juniors – 10.30am to 11.30am – eSafety; how we use iPads in school and advice for parents on screen control

We hope you are able to attend, as these are two key topics that are particularly relevant within the primary school.

In the meantime, I wish all of our Early Years and Primary families a wonderful Chinese New Year holiday. Our team looks forward to welcoming everyone back on Monday 15th February.

Xin nian kuai le!

Lisa Passante

Head of Primary
