English

After the holidays, we will begin our new topic entitled 'AD 900'. In order to support the children's learning in this unit we will deliver the objectives for our English through the topics learnt in AD 900. We will be covering non-fiction and embedding the use of colons and semi colons to create a list, or avoid ambiguity. We will also revisit the use of bullet points and the correct form of punctuation for them, as well as the use of hyphens and dashes. Children will have the opportunity for extended writing in order to demonstrate their understanding.

Maths

During the week after the holiday, children will revisit some fraction work and also begin to compare and make links between fractions and division. This will include rounding decimal answers and working with decimal fractions. The week will also provide children with daily mental maths problems in order to practice different mental strategies and perform calculations with mixed operations and larger numbers.

Topic

We have had an enjoyable and exciting few weeks learning about the evolution of life on Earth and the possibilities of life on other planets. The next week introduces children to the stories of life within history. Our new unit, 'AD 900', will look at three ancient empires and the rise and fall of these communities. Children will learn about a number of non-European civilisations; the Mayan, Benin and Islamic civilisations.  A largely history-based unit of work, children will discover the ancient principles which sustained these communities and the causes of their change. We will also produce some art and study some international objectives.

Please refer to the attached topic introduction letter for more information.
