Meet Our Businesswomen Panel for Careers & University Fair 2016

How do you build a successful business in China? What does it take to make your mark in the world’s second largest economy? And does gender play a part?

These questions and many more will be answered by our panel of successful businesswomen who will join us for a special “Women in Business in China” discussion at this year’s NAIS Pudong Careers & University Fair on Thursday 10th March.

  • Michelle
  • Carol
  • Agnes
  • Christele Voulaz

The fair is being held in the same week as International Women’s Day (March 8th) and so provides the perfect opportunity to find out how some successful businesswomen have navigated the relatively newly chartered waters of foreign business in China.

From social enterprise to high-end luxury goods, hospitality to art, our panelists have a breadth of experience that will surely inspire the next generation of entrepreneurs and businesspeople.

Our panelists are:

Michelle Garnaut - Founder and CEO of the M Restaurant Group, Michelle is a seasoned restaurateur with a culinary career that spans over twenty-five years, several continents and positions that have ranged from chef to waiter to dishwasher, caterer and everything in between, culminating in proprietor in 1989. She is an enterprising pioneer who conceived businesses in Hong Kong, Shanghai and Beijing with her signature “M’’ becoming an icon of fine dining, culture, comfort and style. Michelle has been honored with awards that include Entrepreneur of the Year (International Woman of Influence Awards) and the Business Entrepreneurial Award (ANZ Australian Business Awards) and most recently the inaugural Advance Australia Global Awards for Food.

Carol Chyau – Carol is co-founder of SHOKAY, a socially responsible textiles brand that creates premium knitwear, yarn, and fabric from yak down. SHOKAY is based in Shanghai and sold globally. SHOKAY has won numerous distinctions for its innovative work, and through this, Carol was named as one of the top social entrepreneurs in China in The Venture Chivas Competition, Top 10 Creative Talent in Shanghai in 2013, Top 30 Entrepreneurs Under 30 by Forbes China in 2010, was the Asian Finalist for the 2009 Cartier Women’s Initiative Award, and was also selected as an Echoing Green Fellow in 2008. Carol graduated from Harvard Kennedy School’s Masters in Public Administration/International Development (MPA/ID) program and the University of Pennsylvania’s Huntsman Program in International Studies & Business (BS/BA).

Christele Voulaz – With a career with Hermes spanning 25 years, Christele Voulaz made the move to China in 2014 to take on the role of Retail Merchandising Director China and Greater China. Christele gained a BTS Diploma in International Trade and holds qualifications in European Business (International Commerce, Marketing and Management). Beginning as a Sales Assistant for point-of-sale materials, Christele’s career with Hermes has seen her work in all facets of the luxury retailer’s business including travel retail, customer service, commercial management, product range and retail merchandising. Now in Shanghai, she manages multicultural teams for merchandising, product training, visual merchandising and customer relationship management.

Agnes Cohade - Founder and co-owner of Art+ Shanghai Gallery, one of Shanghai's leading galleries dedicated to contemporary Chinese art, Agnes hails originally from France. She has a degree from the French Business School and a Master of Science in Business Administration from the Pennsylvania State University. Agnes spent 18 years living in a variety of countries, including Brazil, the United States, Mexico, Singapore, and Switzerland, before moving to China in 2005. Through her extensive international experience, she gained valuable exposure to the world's variety of art and culture. Multilingual, Agnes is fluent in English, Spanish, French, and Portuguese, with proficiency in Chinese. Since opening Art+ Shanghai Gallery in 2007, Agnes Cohade has acted as one of the gallery's managing directors.
