We began the day with the Parade of Nations, with Argentina leading the way as students, teachers and even parents showed their national pride, dressed in national costume and colours, and flying the flags of their countries, marched to their national anthems around the sports ground. There was much chanting, cheering and applause, and none more so than when our own “United Nations of Early Years” took their turn.

All that marching certainly worked up an appetite for the food fantasia that is the International Food Fair, three hours of gastronomic delights from around the globe. From flying roti and popping rice cakes, to luscious chocolate mousse and pandan jellies, and with just about everything in between, the International Food Fair gave students a small and delicious taste of each of the nations represented. Many parents had spent days baking and cooking to deliver this amazing feast to the very appreciative students and teachers.

The day was interspersed with wonderful parent-organised entertainment. Our Korean mums put on a very skillful display of Taekwondo, dressed in their Korea national suits and looking rather fierce as they went through their routines, with one even breaking timber with her hand and foot! As today marks the special Indian celebration of Holi, our Indian students dressed in saris the colour of the rainbow, presented a beautiful and energetic Holi dance, much to the delight of the students and parents who gathered for the performances. The crowd was impressed by the skill and fearlessness of a Malaysian Tea Dancer, who whirled around and poured tea from awe-inspiring heights, without spilling a drop.

Making a very glamorous appearance, our Chinese mums donned their most beautiful qipaos for a parade fit for a Milan catwalk. The parade and dresses were months in the planning and was a stunning addition to the line-up. As a special treat, our Chinese parents also organised for the Shanghai Opera School to perform an excerpt from The Monkey King. The actors, in bold and impressive makeup and costumes, performed acrobatics and danced to traditional Chinese music.

There is a reason so many NAIS Pudong students and teachers, in the lead-up to this day say it’s the “best day of the year”. That’s because it is!

Thank you to everyone involved, from the wonderful country coordinators and parents who cooked up a storm for the food fair, to the fantastic performers, and of course, to the Community Group, led by Jody Dexter, Selena Bertolotti and Heike Springmann, and teachers for their organisation of the day.
