English

During English, we have been focusing on a number of reading and writing objectives; we will continue this into next week. Children will be thinking about figurative language; how authors use figurative language and the impact it has on readers. To reinforce the work children have done this week on ‘Show Not Tell’, children will have the chance to be authors themselves and embed into their own writing, the figurative language skills they identify in different texts. We will also look at describing character and setting and being imaginative and descriptive with our language in poetry, depicting different themes and emotions. Throughout the week we will also be reinforcing our SPAG skills and practising a number of different SPAG techniques.

Maths

Next week in Maths, children will focus on two areas. During the first part of the week, we will revise averages within data. Children will learn about the median, mean, mode and range of statistics; what these terms mean and how to calculate and apply them. Later in the week, we will revisit fractions. It is important that children have a clear understanding of what a fraction is and how to calculate using fractions. We will look at using all four operations for fractions and also finding fractions of different amounts.

Topic

Our Fairgrounds topic is proving to be very popular. We have moved on slightly from creating fairground rides and have begun to focus on the sights and sounds of the Fair. Children will complete work on the mechanics of the ear and the impact losing one of our senses can have. We will then move on to looking at the physics of how boats float and where we can see this similar technology in the Fairground. We will also be doing some debating next week and considering how people work together for mutual benefit.
