English

Next week, we will begin by reading extracts taken from ‘The Firework Maker’s Daughter’ by Phillip Pullman. The book tells the story of Lila, the daughter of a firework maker, as she discovers the challenges and tribulations she must face if she is to become a true master at her craft. Using the book as a stimulus, the children will develop their skills in understanding a text, inferring a character’s thoughts, feelings and motives from their actions, justifying these with evidence. The children will also use clues and information from the text to try and make plausible predictions about what will happen next in the story. The children will then plan and write their own story based on the text, focusing on developing settings, characters and plot.

In guided reading, the children will use atlases to develop their understanding of the features of some non-fiction texts.

In spelling, they will learn how to spell words with the /k/ sound spelt ch (scheme, chorus, chemist, echo, character, etc.)

Maths

In Maths we will begin our second week of learning about time. We will reinforce and revise using an analogue clock to tell the time, as well as converting between analogue and digital times. The children will also learn how to read timetables, solve problems involving adding and subtracting time and calculate the duration of different events in hours, minutes and seconds.

Topic

The children will continue their work as technologists by developing and refining their calendars and sundials. They will also continue to learn about different festivals and celebrations around the world that celebrate light.
