Most of these contributions are a continuation of longstanding commitments to assist these charities with their important work in the Shanghai community; however, the Community Center Shanghai donation is a new addition to the great support the Community Group, working with students and the broader school body, give to worthy causes in Shanghai. Following the AGM, new CCS Executive Director, Zhen Zeng-Liao, spoke with Community Group members and thanked them for the support pledged which is two-fold.
Firstly, it involves a 10,000RMB donation to the Community Center Shanghai to support their subsidised counselling programme which provides affordable mental health services for expats and now Shanghai locals who are unable to afford or access counselling services elsewhere. According to CCS, the need for these services is growing as the demographic and means of expats and returning Chinese in the Shanghai community has changed over the past few years. In that time, many younger expats and self-funded families have moved to Shanghai with, of course, a full spectrum of needs that CCS strives to accommodate.
A further 10,000RMB will be donated from proceeds from this year’s school events, including the upcoming Summer Fun Day on June 4th, for a new programme provided by CCS and other mental health services within Shanghai, called REACH. This service is in its infancy, and with the funds to be donated by NAIS Pudong, they will provide crisis funds for people in domestic violence situations, and support the various organisations as they work with people experiencing very difficult situations a long way from their home.
The support of NAIS Pudong students and parents for our Community Group and school events has enabled the Community Group to donate a total of 250,000RMB to charities, including:
- Sponsorship for 17 students through Shanghai Sunrise to complete two further years of education
- Six Heart 2 Heart surgeries
- Surgeries for two babies with serious medical conditions through Baobei
- Food shopping for the HuiXin Orphanage as well as CNY event and purchase of winter sleeping suits
