English

This week in English, the children have been focusing on; relative clauses, adverbials, conjunctions and parenthesis. We will continue to look at these objectives again next week, but will be extending the children’s learning further. We will be using a range of pictures to stimulate ideas for our writing. The children will be selecting different genres to write and then trying to embed the skill we are focusing on. During the week, we will be looking at using relative clauses, adverbials and subordinate clauses at different places in a sentence. In addition, we will be trying to link all these skills together in one piece of writing. Finally, the children will work in pairs to evaluate and edit a piece of their writing. The teacher will then give the children feedback on their writing and their next target to focus on.

Maths

Next week in Mathematics, we will be revising those objectives which we have found most challenging. We will be returning to work on timetables, including reading timetables, completing timetables by deducing missing information, and even creating our own timetables in a tricky problem-solving activity. We will also be revisiting telling the time on analogue and digital clocks, moving onto calculating time intervals and exploring time zones. Finally, we will be looking at conversions between metric units of measure, stretching ourselves into Mastering by using pictograms, nanometres,  and other less frequently used units.

Topic

In Topic, the children will be learning about Eco-tourism. The children will be looking at irresponsible tourism and researching some case studies and asking questions such as; is elephant trekking ethical? Should I use hiking sticks when trekking through ancient temples?  The children will then imagine that they own a tourist resort in a developing country. They will create a mind map with the title -  'If I owned a tourist resort'. The children will consider questions such as; how can I promote tourism but preserve cultures? How can local people benefit from tourism? Later on in the week, the children will pretend that they are travel journalists. They will write a magazine article for 'National Geographic'; describing a visit to a resort which they have researched. Towards the end of the week, the children will look at the effects natural disasters has on tourism. To finish the week off, the children will be preparing a tourists' video for a city.
