Letter from the Head of Secondary - 5th May 2016

The IB and IGCSE exams are now in full flow, and students seem to be – largely –taking them in their stride. They arrive each morning, ready to face whatever the day brings, some of them accepting our offer of a brain-boosting banana before entering the exam hall, some taking a last look through their notes, whilst others stand in silent contemplation of the day ahead. Once in the hall, an air of calm focus descends, the instructions are given, and the clock ticks down the time…

The rest of the Secondary school, of course, carries on largely as normal, with students preparing for their end-of-year exams and assessments in three weeks’ time. After these exams and assessments, students will have a week or so of feedback. As I have said before, this is actually the most valuable part of the assessment process – gaining an understanding of why he or she lost marks, and how to avoid this next time around.

Yesterday, we had a lovely assembly, led by Miss Kilpatrick and Miss Cuskin on the theme of Service. Our Year 12 students shared with us their experiences on the recent trip to Tanzania, and our environmental group gave us an update on their activities monitoring our power usage.  Miss Cuskin then explained the forthcoming ‘Read to Feed’ initiative – please sponsor as generously as you can – encouraging our children to read more, and raise money for a very good cause, this is a real  win-win initiative. We were also shown some footage of last year’s trip to Iceland, and I’m sure many of you will be attending the information evening for next year’s trip this evening.

Looking ahead, we have the Stage and Screen evening next Thursday, which promises to be a wonderful musical and dramatic extravaganza, and I look forward to seeing many of you there.

Dinah Hawtree
