Principal's Message - 23rd June 2016

Well we made it! Half a day to go and the final term draws to a close. The buzz around the school over the last few days has been great; I truly am in awe of how amazing our students are. Watching our oldest to our youngest collaborate on end-of-year activities, supporting each other in such a nurturing inclusive environment, is such a pleasure to be part of.

Of course the end of year is always tinged with an air of sadness as, for many families, the summer marks the end of their time in Shanghai. For all our students moving to pastures new we hope you hold the warmest of memories of Shanghai and NAIS Pudong close in your hearts. We thank you for all your outstanding contributions and energy you have brought to our school.

I am sure you will also join me in wishing our leaving staff a fond farewell and thank them for their care, guidance and inspiration they have shown our students over the years they have been here. They will certainly be missed, but move on knowing that during the time here, no matter how long or short, they played a leading role in shaping the future of some remarkable young students.

Particularly, we must bid farewell to Mrs. Dinah Hawtree who returns to warmer climes and a Principal’s role in Garden International School Rayong, Thailand. We wish her and her husband all the very best in their relocation. We also thank Mr. Andrew Howard for his contributions over the past 5 years, holding a number of positions over their time here. Both Mr. and Mrs. Howard move for a new adventure in Kuala Lumpur, where they join the team at Alice Smith school, with Mrs. Howard leading the Science Department and Mr. Howard heading up the Sixth Form (Year 12 and 13). We wish them and their three fantastic sons, Joshua, Thomas and Oliver future happiness in their new venture.

Also relocating to Kuala Lumpur is our PR and Community Development Manager Lynette MacDonald. Lynette has taken communication to a new level in our school, ensuring media coverage highlighting student success across Shanghai, raising the profile of social media as a tool to share our news, as well as the establishment of WeChat to send out regular updates and keep you informed about school life. I am sure you will join me in thanking Lynette for her hard work and support of all our community events.

The Community Group takes on a new look next year with our fabulous Chair Jody Dexter stepping down as she spends more time in school enjoying events after two hugely successful years. Stepping up to the challenge is Lianne Nigro as Chair and Mechelle Gawthorn as Vice Chair. They would love to hear from you and see how you can get involved as we look at new and wonderful ways to draw us together. Bringing us together right at the start of the year, will be our very first major Community Group-led event, International Week when we celebrate our school’s diversity and culture. This year, as requested by parents, we move this event back to Term 1. The Parade of Nations and International Food fair will take place on September 29th, so mark the date in your diary. If you are travelling home over the summer, you may also want to bring back to Shanghai some souvenirs ready for one of the most spectacular days in the school diary.

So, as our school year draws to a close, a reminder that school will be out for summer at 12 noon tomorrow.  We wish you and your family a happy and safe holiday and hope you get to spend some precious time relaxing with family and friends.

Whilst students and teaching staff exit for the long break, throughout the holiday period school remains open, from 9am-4pm, with key areas of school life still in place. We welcome our Summer School students, and will spend the summer renovating and upgrading ready for a fresh start to the next academic year. We will keep in contact with you frequently in the summer and look forward to seeing you at Orientation Day on August 19th.
