Year 6 Week Ahead Information

An overview of the week ahead in Year 6

  • African Drumming in Year 6

Information and Reminders

Thank you to all parents who got involved in International Week, whether by making food, costumes, or helping with homework. The students have shown excellent international mindedness to learn and share so much about different countries and cultures during this week.

A special thanks also to Mrs. Scott, who visited 6B to teach the class about Aboriginal Australian ‘dream stories’ and artwork.

If any other parents feel inspired to share some of their own expertise at any point this year, please get in touch.

Project Week is nearly upon us; thanks to all parents who have submitted the necessary information.

English

In English we will begin a new unit about the field of discovery and archaeology. We will be reading non-fiction texts such as news reports, information texts and discursive writing. Our teaching of Spelling, Grammar and Punctuation (SPAG) will begin to increase within our normal classes and timetable.

For parents of those students who have been given banded reading books, please remind your child to return them to school when the books have been finished, to enable us to swap for fresh titles. Thank you to those who have shared in their child’s learning by listening to them read or asked questions about the text.

Maths

In mathematics we will be working on visualising and constructing, which encompasses the concepts of 2-D shape drawing, angles, and 3-D shapes. This type of work can be a welcome break to those who are finding number work difficult at present.

One of our Y6 learning objectives is to divide 4-digit numbers by 2-digit numbers, using long division. We know this is a long road and will involve lots of practice. If your child is struggling, please reassure them that continued effort will pay off in the end, and even the trickiest problem can be solved with practice.

Topic

Our AD900 unit will enter its final phase, as we turn our attention to the Islamic Empire. Students will compare and contrast the rise of this civilisation with those of the Mayans and Benin.

Students will learn about the story of Muhammad and how his ideas spread around Arabia and into Europe. We will be using various sources to find out about the past. Students will learn how to describe reasons for the spread of Islam and its role in building cities such as Baghdad, once the centre of the scientific world.
