Happy New Year! A big welcome back to all of our returning students and an extra special welcome to the new families who have joined us this term.

Don’t forget our Primary Academic Review Evenings taking place on Tuesday 17th and Thursday 19th January from 5pm to 8pm. Information on how to make an appointment was sent out earlier this week. Please let your child’s class teacher know if you did not receive this.
January and February are usually the coldest months of the year in Shanghai. Please make sure your child comes to school every day wearing their winter uniform, and with appropriate layers to equip them for the playground.

Stars of the Week
Star of the Week in 5A is Max Braumann, for utilizing his skills of persuasion in English.
Star of the Week in 5B is Jiwon Kim, for participating enthusiastically in all lessons.
Linked to our topic work, we will be using our skills of research and retrieval to find information about Roman armies and the conquest of Britain. We will continue to apply the skills we learnt this week, using cohesive devices to link ideas in our writing. We will also look at modal verbs; learn how they are used in existing pieces of writing and then use them in our own independent writing. In spelling, we will identify word ending in –ant, –ance/–ancy, –ent, –ence/–ency. Games and tips can be found on the Spellzone website (https://www.spellzone.com)
After a very interesting week of looking at real-life time problems we are moving onto exploring fractions, decimals and percentages. We will be investigating the equivalence between fractions; the equivalence between fractions and decimals; and understanding the meaning of percentages. To help with their understanding, the children we be doing lots of practical activities to become confident in this area.
In topic, the children will explore the territories Rome conquered, they will look at in particularly at the Roman conquest of Britain. The children will be learning about the rebellion of Boudicca, finding reasons for her revolt against Roman rule in Britain. Additionally, The children will investigate the discipline of the Roman army, they will be practising military formations outside on the playground. Towards the end of the week, we will be making and decorating Roman shields. If you have any spare cardboard at home, please bring this into school.
