Message from the Principal - 20th January

Dear Parents,

I am writing on behalf of Mrs Wallace this week, whilst she is in London at our annual Nord Anglia recruitment event. It is at this time of year when we begin planning for the next academic year and identifying outstanding teachers to join our existing, talented team. As the following two terms progress, Mrs Wallace will keep you informed of new staff joining us for the 2017-18 academic year.

This week we have enjoyed having the opportunity to meet with parents of our Early Years, Primary and Key Stage 3 students. As a new term begins it is the perfect time to review the progress made by our students and, together, set ambitious goals to achieve during the remainder of the academic year, which will be upon us far too quickly. Next week we host our Year 10 and Year 12 Academic Review Evenings, so please do make your appointments via our online booking system.

Term 2 CCAs also got underway this week with the vast majority of our students participating in a variety of activities. With our new ‘Maker Space’ located on the second floor of B Block we have introduced a number of STEAM themed CCAs this term, where our students (and staff) can display their passion for innovation and creation. I’m sure that over the course of the year we will see some great ideas come to fruition from within the Maker Space.

It has been a busy week sportswise with our NAIS Tigers currently in Hong Kong at the ACAMIS Basketball. Reports from Mr Wallace and Mrs Parrish have been that both U19 teams are playing really well. As I write, our girls are sure to reach the semi-finals, and the boys have one game left to try and reach their semi-finals. Mr Wallace will provide us with a more detailed report when the teams return after the weekend. On Saturday our U9 and U11 Netball teams will also be competing and we look forward to hearing how they get on when they return to school on Monday.

Several of our Y12 and Y13 students will also be participating at the Model United Nations VIII, held at Concordia, over the course of the weekend. With schools visiting Shanghai from across the world, we wish our students the best of luck as they discuss and debate topics within the theme of Responsibility to Protect.

Back at school, we begin the festivities in preparation for Chinese New Year. Today, our secondary students launch the celebrations with their special Chinese New Year assembly. On Sunday, of course, we will be hosting our Chinese New Year Temple Fair from 11am to 3pm. We have a large number of crafts and activities that you can participate in as well as a number of performances to come and watch. There will also be delicious Chinese food to keep your energy levels up throughout the day. Next Tuesday, our Juniors and Key Stage 3 students will have the opportunity to participate in a Kung Fu demonstration; and our Primary students will finish the week with their Chinese New Year assembly.

Please remember that we will finish school, for the Chinese New Year holidays, on Thursday 26th January. Students and staff are invited to wear traditional Chinese dress or the colour red on Thursday. School will finish at 3.15pm and there will be no CCAs on Thursday, in order to allow everyone to go home in a timely fashion.

On a final note, our Community Group invites both teachers and parents to join them tomorrow evening at the Big Bamboo in Jinqiao, for casual drinks and conversation. I look forward to seeing you there, and indeed at our Temple Fair on Sunday.

Best wishes,

Lisa Passante

Head of Primary
