Year 1 Week Ahead Information

An overview of the week ahead in Year 1

  • Getting to grips with fractions in Year 1

Information and reminders

The entry point for our new IPC topic will begin with a fashion parade in which the children have been asked to dress up as their favourite popstar. We appreciate this is late notice, so encourage parents to use clothes, costumes, accessories that they already have. A message was put on Class Dojo at the beginning of the week, please check for more information.

The weather has changed over the last week. To ensure your children are wrapped up during play times and at home time, please could you practice zipping up or buttoning coats. This is a great opportunity to develop fine motor skills and would help us to make sure they are kept warm.

You should now have received an email inviting you take part in our annual Parent Satisfaction Survey. We would really appreciate you taking the time to complete the survey by following this link: http://parentsurvey.nordanglia.com/survey/selfserve/5a0/160104?wave=y2017  Thank you.

English

In English, the children will be learning all about the past. They will be given information about the Beatles and their music and will use their phonic skills to complete reading activities. We will look closely at the language related to time and create time lines to show how music technology has changed over the years.

Key vocabulary:  today, yesterday, last week, last month

Mathematics

In Mathematics, we will continue to explore fractions. The focus will be to identify and separate objects, shapes and quantities into 1/2 and 1/4 . The children will be encouraged to explain their answers and use fraction notations to write one half and one quarter. We will introduce the term numerator and denominator and their meanings.

Key vocabulary:  whole, equal, half, halves, quarter, fraction, numerator, denominator

Topic

Next week, the children will begin a new topic ‘Time Travellers.’ We are celebrating 50 years of the Beatles album ‘Sergeant Pepper’s Lonely Hearts Club Band.’ The album and song titles lend themselves to exploring the eight IPC learning goals: adaptability, thoughtfulness, resilience, communication, morality, world citizens, respect and enquiry. Over the coming weeks we will explore, compare and contrast sixties fashion, music and art.
