Year 6 Week Ahead Information

An overview of the week ahead in Year 6

  • Year 6 investigate...

Information and Reminders

Thanks to all who attended our final Academic Review Evenings of the year. There will be a final written report at the end of June, but no more scheduled AREs. Please contact your child’s class teacher if you would like to discuss anything.

Preparations for the KS2 production are underway. Our first task is to allocate roles according to the students’ preferred level of involvement. All students will have the choice to take a speaking or non-speaking role, plus the two songs which all students will sing. We will then begin rehearsals on an occasional basis so as not to interrupt the regular curriculum too drastically before SATs examinations. Practice will become more frequent after SATs as we energise the students in their last few weeks of school.

Stars of the Week

6B – Joshua Haynes – for taking on leadership responsibilities and showing teamwork skills

6C – Whole class – for their hard work in putting together their class assembly.

English

In English, we will continue to prepare and perform mock trials, using familiar stories for content. Students will practice their ability to engage and persuade an audience through speech and delivery. Students will also practice their listening skills as jurors. We will continue our links with Year 1 classes by preparing a geography lesson to deliver to the younger students on Friday. Our SPAG topics are pronouns and relative clauses.

Maths

In maths, we will begin studying coordinates and special movement. Students will be able to use coordinates to describe and plot the position of a point in any of the four quadrants. We will also practice drawing and translating simple shapes, and carry out reflection using one of the axes as a mirror line. One common error is to confuse the order of x-coordinates and y-coordinates: ‘along the corridor, then up the stairs; x comes before y in the alphabet, and in coordinates’.

Topic

We will continue our unit, ‘What a Wonderful World’, which is a geography-themed programme of study. We’ll be finding out more about how plate tectonics affect life on Earth. We will also explore the forces and processes that shape our planet, and about the layers of the Earth’s surface and below.
