Year 7 Newsletter – 26th May 2017

This newsletter starts with some superb news of Risa Imamura and Kaiyao Jiang who will be representing Year 7 with the Year7/6 transition assembly that is due to happen in a couple of weeks. I was so impressed with all the piano players and it was really hard to choose. Thank you for playing Louise He, Karlijn Gabrielse & Jessica Long and Lenard Chang. The remainder of the year are busily planning a superb assembly for the Year 6’s. I can’t wait to see the outcome when we come back from the long weekend.

This lead into the last assessment cycle of the year;  I was so proud to see my year group sit in the large hall doing their end of year assessments. They clearly were surprised at the enormity of the hall, but took it in their stride and were amazing. I took some photos of their last exam in the hall and have posted the majority of them onto ClassDojo.

Here’s an update of the exams coming up for them after the longer break, which will be happening in their normal classrooms.

Message from Parent Committee:

Summer Fair – Saturday 10th June, 11am-4pm

This year, there will be a small fee per child (100RMB) to attend the Summer Fair.

Important things to remember:

Tombola - a letter was sent out to secondary children and their parents asking for prize donations for the Tombola. Items such as fancy foodstuffs, boxes of chocolates, toiletries or unwanted gifts of any value would be greatly appreciated. Please send in to Therese Andrews, Deputy Head of Secondary, Room C204.

Used books collection – any used books, in reasonable condition, which you wish to donate to be sold, should be sent in with your children to drop off at Main Reception as soon as possible.

We would be very grateful if you could help us with volunteering on the day. Even an hour of your time is appreciated. Please email Sarah on sarahjmagee@gmail.com.

Student Reporters

7A had their turn at writing a student report, thank you for sharing your classroom experiences.

Lilian Yearwood - English

During English the last couple of weeks we have been writing a back story based on the ballad by Alfred Lord Tennyson called- the Lady of Shalott. We have previously looked at another poem by him called the Kraken about a creature that lives in the depths of the ocean. A ballad is a poem with 14 lines and is quite like a song.

The ballad is based on King Arthur's knight Sir Lancelot and how a woman in a tower falls in love with him. The woman in the tower is under a curse meaning she cannot look out the window or leave the tower otherwise something dreadful will happen. But she looks out the window when she sees Sir Lancelot, meaning the curse begins.

In our stories we have to explain why the Lady of Shalott is in the tower. We have been including creative writing techniques such as personification, similes, hyperboles and metaphors. These add suspense and make the descriptions better. After we finished drafting and editing our stories in our book we got laptops and wrote a finished copy.

Next time we are back to 7A for their fortnightly classroom update.

In DT this term we have been making earphone tidy ideas using a program called Adobe illustrate. We have drawn designs that we can wrap our earphones around to keep them tidy. The material we are using is acrylic. We are connecting our document to a laser cutter. It is a really fun and simple project.

Sasiresh Subramanian - Music

We are reciting a piece called Scarborough Fair and we had to play it on the piano. Mr. Bailey wanted us to use just our right hand and we could use our left if we found it easy. There were three tiers. The first tier was the original piece the second tier was including chords and the third tier was to make a variation. I think we did well but next time we should probably get more tiers done.

After playing our pieces we did a little revision on the different types of instruments like percussion, brass, woodwind and strings. We also went through where the players in the orchestra sit. We also did a little bit of work on folk music, for example- African folk music would have A lot of percussion instruments, Indian folk music would have a lot of string instruments. We also revised the keywords like dynamics, tempo, etc. The thing I found interesting was the periods of Music like Baroque, Classical, Romantic and Modern.

Luca Jones- ICT

In ICT, recently we have started looking at advertisements and their sounds. Our teacher, Mr. Rasool has given us this word document. On the document we have five tracks; each track has to have a link from an advert. Then there is another four slots. They are such things as; what is the advert advertising? How has it made it suitable? What sounds do you hear? What order are they in? We had to answer these questions on an advert of our choice. Mr. Rasool gave us three lessons on this because he wanted work of a high quality. I’m sure like everyone else in the class; this for me has been extremely fun.
