Staff Profile: Daniel Guiney

DGU Guiney Daniel Secondary

History Teacher

Daniel has taught in England, Singapore, and Egypt which have all shaped his teaching philosophy. He has held a variety of roles in schools including Head of Grade, Child Protection Officer, and SENCo but teaching History remains his passion. When Daniel began teaching in 2001 chalk was his primary teaching tool but he now enjoys embracing technological shifts to support learning and is a keen advocate of the flipped classroom, tech slams, and applying social media to inform learning in History.

Daniel has examined for SHP in the UK and presently examines for the IBO. Amongst his most memorable teaching experiences are taking students into the burial chamber of Khafre’s pyramid to learn about Ancient Egyptian burial rites, leading a team of Singaporeans in the Asian History Bowl in Hong Kong, and teaching a lesson to a mixed class of British and German students at Bayernwald cemetery as part of a First World War battlefields visit. Daniel was awarded the HM Queen Mother Great War Scholarship for services to History education in 2007.

He feels very fortunate to have worked with many inspiring students, parents, and teachers and looks forward to this continuing in China, a country with a unique and extraordinary History.

When not working Daniel enjoys practising his Tagalog, eating Korean food, and visiting sites of historic interest. He loves kayaking and reading American poetry, but not usually at the same time. Daniel is a lifelong Aston Villa FC supporter and is happiest watching cricket with a cup of tea, a piccalilli sandwich, and a crossword.
