Special Notice: Food Safety

Special Notice: Food Safety We are satisfied that systems and processes are robust and we will be monitoring the catering within the school to ensure the current high standards are maintained.

Dear Parents

It has come to our attention that it has been reported in the Shanghai press that the catering company Chartwells Shanghai had been using out of date products in the preparation of meals for a bilingual school in the city. Chartwells Beijing, a separate division of the same company provide the meals for BSB.

We have spoken with the Chartwells Beijing and they have explained the circumstances around these Shanghai reports. There were indeed foodstuffs present in the kitchen which were deemed to be of poor quality but these were in a returns area to go to back to the supplier and not for use or consumption.

However we felt that it was important to take this opportunity to check our own kitchen operation and over the weekend a full audit was carried out of all food stuffs and I am pleased to be able to report that none were found to be out of date. This follows on from a routine Government inspection, carried out before the Golden Week Holiday, which also found no out of date products. I also pleased to be able to report that our kitchens here at BSB have never failed an inspection and there has never been a recorded case of unsuitable, out of date, products being present in the Kitchen. I can further add that the government food standards agency has visited us today (Monday 22nd October), at our invitation, and have confirmed that all processes, procedures and products conform to all standards.

The kitchen has a full record of all deliveries and returns and these are all in order. Also the school had installed CCTV cameras in the kitchens, some time ago, and the recorded footage from the cameras is checked randomly and/or available for inspection to check that day to day operations conform to the hygiene standards that are expected.

The checking of all the policies and procedures has been a worthwhile activity as we must not become complacent around food standards. We are satisfied that systems and processes are robust and we will be monitoring the catering within the school to ensure the current high standards are maintained.

Best regards

Principal
