Last week, students from The British School of Guangzhou travelled to Shanghai to take part in the very first Nord Anglia Education Regional STEAM Festival hosted at the British International School Shanghai, Puxi.

Built around the exciting theme “Life on Mars”, students were challenged to imagine a future where Earth is no longer habitable and humanity must survive and thrive on Mars. Working in mixed-school teams with students from across Nord Anglia schools, participants collaborated to design innovative solutions linked to habitats, food systems, transport, ecosystems, and sustainability in space.

Representing BSG were 6 primary and 5 secondary students, who took part in a range of hands-on workshops and activities throughout the festival. Students explored areas such as 3D printing, water filtration systems, sustainable living in space, and habitat design before returning to their teams to develop and present their own creative solutions.

The focus of the festival was not competition, but collaboration, communication, creativity, and problem-solving. Students demonstrated excellent teamwork while learning how to think critically and adapt their ideas in a real-world inspired challenge.

Although the event celebrated collaboration over competition, awards were also presented for outstanding presentations and poster designs. We are incredibly proud that our Year 7 studentShirley Hu and her team won the award for Best Design and Poster Presentation.

A huge congratulations to all of our BSG students for representing the school with curiosity, creativity, and confidence throughout the festival. Experiences like these continue to show how STEAM education empowers students to think beyond the classroom and prepare for the challenges of the future.

Special thanks to Mr. Tajov, Mr. Esdaile, and Ms. Wu for supporting and guiding our students throughout this incredible experience.
