Book Week 2015 - Secondary

13 March 2015

Read Vanessa Walker's review of all the wonderful Book Week events that our secondary students participated in.

The secondary students participated in a variety of events for Book Week 2015. One of the highlights was the Literary Quiz which took place during the Enrichment session on Wednesday 4 March. The students were divided into mixed teams across MYP and they tested their knowledge on authors, characters, genre and plot. There was a French round to challenge the top teams and a fun guess-the-teacher-from-the-book round. The winning team cleaned up the competition by 9 points and featured Julius MYP 5, Victoria MYP 4, Daniel MYP 4, Tiya MYP 2, Aline MYP 2, Declan MYP 2 and Thomas MYP 1.

Students also enjoyed the daily “Drop Everything And Read” sessions which were held across the whole school. It was wonderful to immerse ourselves in a good book in the middle of the school day! Another school-wide event was the Secondary/Primary reading scheme in which several MYP students visited the classes in Primary to read to the younger students. This activity was enjoyed by everyone involved and it was lovely to see the two sections of the school bonding over books.

Children’s author Elizabeth Knight, who wrote The Skull, visited the MYPs and held workshops with the MYP 1, 2 and 3 classes. The students heard an extract from her book and participated in very engaging discussions and drama activities. They learnt a lot from the experience, and hopefully LCIS now has some budding new authors.

And finally, all the doors in the secondary corridors were decorated with book covers designed by the students according to different genres. MYP1 covered fantasy, MYP2 focused on dystopia, MYP 3 explored horror, the MYP 4s looked at young love and the MYP 5s tested their skill on graphic novels and historical fiction. The students voted for their favourite cover and first prize went to Abigaël Mackenzie and Julius Meierhofer for their cover of Batman: The Dark Knight Returns. There was also an Author’s Choice award, selected by Elizabeth Knight, and that went to Alex, Jo, Joris and George for their terrifying effigy on the cover of The Legend of Sleepy Hollow.
