Many of us may well remember the interactive fiction books of our youths, of hours spent making desperate choices to continue a story of adventure.
Last Friday, 13th March, just prior to the launch of our Portable Magic Festival, all of Year 6 and a select band of Year 9, had the chance to experience this style of fiction as they ventured to the theatre in an attempt to escape a haunted house.
Beginning from an academic project across some secondary and primary school students from Year 9 and Year 6, the group collaborated to create a coherent interactive adventure story. Utilising a series of writing techniques based upon the key criteria that runs from Key Stage 2 to Key Stage 3, their literary paragraphs were finely honed for a public audience.
Although the students came to a sticky end on more than one occasion, their palpable excitement meant that they continued with the performance of our story well into their breaktime. Such enthusiasm for both reading and writing, and for the academic processes behind such literacy, was evident in the cheers, groans and smiles from everyone (and especially the teachers!).
Mr Cottrell said that, “Year 6 loved working with the Year 9s, and I think it’s a great transition idea. I know the children in Year 6 will be talking about it for a long time to come.”
