Soap Snow Flakes at Nursery It is winter and although it is cold outside, we haven’t had proper white snow yet! The Nursery children decided to make some snow inside so they could play with it.

It is winter and although it is cold outside, we haven’t had proper white snow yet! The Nursery children decided to make some snow inside so they could play with it. 

All they needed was a box of soap flakes, warm water and various whisks. The children tipped a box of soap flakes into three containers and poured in some cups of warm water, which needed to be at least as hot as bath water in order for the flakes to dissolve properly. Then the fun began! Using three different types of whisks; an old–fashioned rotary whisk, an electric one and a hand whisk, the children had a go enthusiastically.

It took a while for the flakes to melt into the water, but when they had dissolved the bubbles turned into a squidgy, smooth, wonderfully malleable substance. Using all these types of whisks offered a fantastic opportunity for both gross and fine motor skills development. Then, to add some more fun and learning we added some powder paints to the soapy base.

They whisked and stirred in the colours and created beautiful marbled patterns and swirls. The children liked touching it, they were delighted by the smell of it and marvelled at the new colours they created. The children still want it to snow outside but now they know of an activity they can return to in case it doesn’t!
