8GB Tutor & Visual Arts Teacher

I have been fortunate to join the BISB for a maternity cover. I have come out of retirement to take advantage of this fantastic opportunity - and to add my 35 years successful experience of teaching Art and Design, to this team.

I am a professional artist – but my love of teaching Art and influencing children and young people in the way they approach being creative, has always put my own painting career on the back-burner.

In a world of ever increasing educational conformity - tests and standards etc., I consider Art and being creative as one of the most important subject areas in the curriculum. A chance to express one's own individuality. Everyone is an artist, but most people simply lack self-confidence when it comes to exploring their own visual creativity. It is, and always has been, my job to instil self-belief in my students and to teach them the necessary skills to gain success – in any area of creativity they want to explore, with whatever media.

My philosophy of life – and the way I approach it can be summed as;...there are only two ways to do anything – your best, or not at all. In other words; if do anything half-hearted you will get half-hearted results and surely that should not satisfy anyone...

Having taught most of my career in Saudi Arabia, Thailand and Vietnam I have not owned a coat for 30 years. The first thing I did after joining BISB was buy one! I am actually looking forward to seeing snow again - I think...!

Away from teaching, I love building Lego with my six year old grandson whenever I get the rare opportunity. Of course, we throw away the instructions and get creative...
