Students' Wellbeing

Ensuring the well being of our students is central to all we do at BISB.  Our specialist school counsellor is available to provide emotional and social support to students when they need it.

In the Primary School, the counsellor sees students individually, in small groups, in the classroom and in informal settings like the playground and cafeteria. The counsellor assists students with issues such as:

  • Joining/Leaving the school
  • Self-esteem and friendship skills
  • Anger and stress management
  • Creative problem solving
  • Social issues like bullying
  • Traumatic events (divorce or a death in the family)

In the Secondary School our Counsellor aims to help students achieve personal growth and acquire positive social skills and values as they move through adolescence.  In order to achieve this she provides services to students, parents and school staff in the following areas:

  • communication
  • relationship building skills with peers, parents and teachers
  • time management, organisation and study skills
  • anger management
  • stress management
  • anxiety reduction
  • transitions
  • self-esteem
  • identity development
  • management of peer pressure

Our Counsellor has links with professionals and organisations outside the school and can refer students in cases where more specialised or long-term support is necessary.

Students may self-refer or can be referred by their parents or teachers.

Our number one priority at BISB is the safety and wellbeing of every student in our school and we have robust safeguarding procedures to ensure this.

  • We actively create a culture where students feel safe to speak out about concerns
  • We conduct rigorous checks on staff at the recruitment stage
  • Training in Safeguarding is compulsory for all adults in school (many staff have advanced safeguarding training)
  • Our PSHE curriculum includes lessons which explicitly teach students how to keep themselves safe
  • We have regular Assemblies where the values and expectations of the school are shared with students
  • We have a strong pastoral team and a Designated Safeguarding Lead
  • Our Safeguarding policy is available to the whole school community (in English, Korean and Slovak)
  • We have a child friendly version of the policy which students look at with their class teacher or tutor at the start of each year.
