Student Voice in Mathematics As teachers, we try to know all of our students as well as possible: we try to understand how they work and feel and then we use this to help them achieve their very best.

As teachers, we try to know all of our students as well as possible: we try to understand how they work and feel and then we use this to help them achieve their very best.

One of the best ways to find out how students feel is simply to ask them! Therefore, the maths department runs termly “student voice” programs, where we ask students how they feel about mathematics at BCB. We then compile the results and analyse what we are doing well and what we can improve on.

The student voice that we did this term was even more important than usual as it is more challenging for us to find out how students udents feel now that they are at home doing online learning.

The following are the results from this year’s student voice.

Despite all the online learning, I am proud to say that students still overwhelmingly feel they learn in their maths lessons:

Students also overwhelmingly look forward to their maths lessons, including the online ones.

In fact, most students enjoy the online lessons almost as much as the normal ones.

The level of challenge also seems right, with around 50% of students thinking it is “just right” and 25% thinking its either a little too challenging or, alternatively, a little too straight-forward.

These are some amazing responses. However, there are a few things we can still work towards.

Most notably, I would like to see even more people talking about maths outside of their classrooms.

I would also like to see less students being concerned about their grades and be more focused on their mathematical understanding or even just enjoyment of the material.

And my personal targets given to me by the students - well here they are:

Our students want more homework - this only shows that BCB truly has the best students it could ever ask for!
