Dear Parents,
Around the world last Friday, 23rd April, school’s celebrated World Book Day. This was no different at BCB where all Primary staff and children enjoyed a fantastic time together, celebrating the joy of reading.
Thank you to Miss Anna Bantick and Mr James Chapman, our English Coordinators, for all their hard work in preparing for this event. World Book Day was created by UNESCO on 23rd April 1995 to celebrate books and authors and encourage young people to discover the pleasure of reading.
At BCB, it is very clear that our children have a real thirst for reading. They love their library sessions; they love guided reading where they focus on reading skills in small groups, and they can use books to find out new information. Many of our children are voracious readers, always with a book in hand, and it is fantastic to see this enjoyment.
On World Book Day, the theme was masks, also putting a very positive spin on wearing masks. Classes picked a book to study on the day which either had the theme or a character with a mask, or classes used their creativity to make masks that reflected their story. It was lovely to see creative and artistic activities based around reading and seeing the children enjoying these kinds of activities. You can access here and here to see more of our students' work. There are so many benefits that a themed day can bring.
Masked reader was another great idea on World Book Day. In the morning different teachers wore a mask and read a story to whole year groups. Then in the afternoon, it was the turn of our parents. Some of you did an amazing job and were so well prepared with masks of your own and different learning activities for the children. Thank you so much to all our masked readers.
Early reading, and having stories read to you, or shared together, is proven to increase the benefits for learners in the future. The World Literacy Foundation highlights seven benefits, (link here) it is one of many research units which show these kinds of findings. Bedtime stories are an amazing experience to have together so we do encourage you to do this as often as possible, it makes adults feel better too!
Thank you again to everyone involved in World Book Day, those creating resources, making exciting learning opportunities, and dressing up for the occasion. It brought the school to life in a very special way.
