Dear Parents,
As a school, our students, parents and staff are committed to supporting charities and to take action to help others. This week we have two amazing charities and stories to share. One is led by our Parent Teacher Association (PTA) and the other a food drive coordinated by a student for her Global Politics Coursework. This is being supported by other students in Year 12 sorting donations as an action for the CAS aspect of IBDP, something all students have to complete. It stands for Creativity, Activity and Service and is a compulsory aspect in addition to their academic studies. I will write more about IBDP next week as we will by then have celebrated our first graduation ceremony.
Casa da Criança – Casa da Criança is opening a new foster home for 15 children. They are in need of all appliances, furniture, linen, household supplies, computers, etc. If you click the link below you can find out all about this hugely worthwhile cause and read our dedicated BCB page. Food Drive – Giulia in Year 12 is leading on this and has written the text below to explain more. She has also made a presentation to present to all Primary classes, showing real commitment to this project. Giulia and Year 12 are looking for donations of non-perishable food and there will be boxes at the school entrance for this collection. Please do help if you can. Here is what she said…
‘As it has already happened before, hunger has become a huge issue in the country we live in. About 19 million people suffered from hunger during the coronavirus pandemic in Brazil. A survey carried out between October and December last year shows that more than 116 million people lived with some degree of food insecurity in the period. Between the years 2018 and 2020, the increase in hunger was 27.6% per year while between 2013 and 2018, this pace was no more than 8%.
With that being said, the food donation has the intention of helping individuals who don't have enough income to sustain themselves and their families. To make this happen, we have paired up with Amigos do Bem which is an NGO that works with vulnerable individuals in many different areas, one of them being the donation of food for those in need. We contacted them and offered our help by making a food donation from our school where students would bring in non-perishable food items throughout the period of two weeks where all of the items would be sterilized and stored in our school until the end of the two weeks.
After these two weeks of collection, some members of the NGO will come to our school to collect all the food donated which will then be distributed to families in the northeastern part of Brazil who desperately needs food. This project has the goal of showing our school is willing to make a part of the community which stands upon this issue and that we care about our country. It has been a lovely experience working with the NGO and knowing that our help will help make a change.’

Last week we truly enjoyed our Creative Arts Week, a celebration of art, dance, music and drama. The children had a brilliant time showing their creativity, and staff too, with many of the exciting, planned activities inspiring the children’s learning. The end result, and transforming the entrances to the schools, was an amazing art exhibition with contributions from classes across the school. This exhibition will remain up until the end of the term and the children have admired and loved walking through this every day that they enter school. Social Responsibility – we have two more weeks to go with many of you and our staff planning to travel, needing a negative Covid test result. Let’s be extra vigilant to keep ourselves socially distanced and observing protocols to keep everyone safe and ready to enjoy the break.
