Why it's vital that we encourage children to develop a passion for writing at Northbridge Everyday at Northbridge International School Cambodia, children write; whether they are making notes, typing on their devices, sending emails or recording their learning. Since this is a skill we use daily, it is vital that we encourage children to develop a passion for writing and to understand that they are writers, no matter their age.

In Grade 1, we have been writing stories and learning about what it takes to create an exciting story. In order to do this, we have set the children a challenge to use adjectives and descriptive vocabulary in their work.

To help with this target we have been providing opportunities for the children in Grade 1 to learn different vocabulary. We used our Literacy stations to explore new words and try to put them into sentences, we labelled our learning area with adjectives and we created revolting ice cream sundaes with ingredients such as wriggly worms, squishy brains and sticky mud.

Encourage mistake making

One of the most important parts of learning is making mistakes. Support your child by being positive about mistakes in their work. Children have a great awareness of vocabulary and can often give examples of great words to use however choose not to use them as they don’t know how to spell them. Help your child to get past this hang up and celebrate their work, no matter if there are some spelling mistakes. 

Talk to them

In order to write, children first need to be able to speak. Talking through ideas and having conversations is a great way to support your child’s writing. 

Read with them

When children read different stories, they give themselves ideas that they can use in their own writing. The more stories children are exposed to, the more their imagination grows!
