English as an Additional Language

  • Northbridge Intensive Coaching in English Programme, meet our innaugral group

Northbridge serves a large population of students from different national, cultural, and linguistic backgrounds. To meet the needs of these students whose first language is not English, Northbridge International School Cambodia offers English as an Additional Language (EAL) support for students in grades 2-6. As an international school, Northbridge values the rich diversity that different languages and cultures bring to an educational community. In our program, English language learners acquire the level of English needed to communicate effectively in social situations at school and be academically successful in their classrooms.

Many EAL students are proficient in English and successfully operate in the mainstream classes. Others need varying degrees of English language support depending on a range of factors that are considered at admission. EAL instruction is provided by qualified, experienced EAL teachers who work with students in a variety of ways.

Levels of EAL support

Students receive EAL support in the following manners according to their individual needs and the capacity of the program.

All EAL students attend regular grade level classes and receive EAL support from their classroom teacher. Classroom activities may be modified for the EAL student.

In-class Support

The EAL teacher supports in-class learning by assisting students in their grade level classrooms at a time when the class is studying language. Work may or may not be modified for the EAL student.

Pull-out Support

Students receive specialized language instruction with the EAL teacher in the EAL classroom during the Foreign Language block and/or during literacy time. Focus is on the skill areas of reading, writing, speaking and listening. The vehicle for teaching these skills is the student's grade level Unit of Inquiry.

EAL students are “immersed” in the regular classroom to the greatest degree possible. The EAL students work on the language required to access the mainstream class curriculum. When possible, in-class support from EAL teachers is provided. Current research indicates that immersion with support accelerates the rate of additional language acquisition; it also allows the EAL student to feel included and to contribute in the regular classroom.
