Art is vision

We are honoured to have welcomed Jean-Pierre Augier, sculptor and author and Canon José Mittaz prior at the Grand-Saint-Bernard hospice.

On October 27th and 28th, the sculptor Jean-Pierre Augier and his wife shared their passion for art and creation with us. Their message, which José Mittaz perfectly transmitted during his inspirational speech, goes far beyond what we can see, further than the aesthetics of art, further than the beauty of his pieces sculpted with passion. Their message particularly touched the audience because these creations were born from objects destined to be forgotten. With feeling and talent, Jean-Pierre Augier gives meaning to old tools we would throw away; like a visionary he sees new shapes in them and sculpts them for everyone to see. And that’s what we call art.

His “iron children” as he likes to name them, manifest a surprising contrast: elegantly delicate in their appearance, with minimal, simple traits but profoundly complex and strong, in awakening personal history and interpretations.

Jean-Pierre Augier is a magician transforming endings into new beginnings, disguising iron as angels, and “out of nothing, we can see owls” (words spoken by a student about an art piece and repeated by José Mittaz).

As he said it himself, Jean-Pierre Augier was born a sculptor.

We thank him for sharing his talent and hope to welcome him again soon.
