Parent workshop “Helping your child with English at home”

The parent workshop “Helping your child with English at home” was held successfully at the Yan Ji You bookstore in IFS Chengdu on Saturday afternoon. We welcomed around 50 LIS parents and friends to the workshop. The workshop was presented in English by Ms. Cindy Ali and was translated by Ms. Tina Chen.

Ms. Ali talked about the importance of home language development and parental involvement. She explained the 5 stages of language acquisition and how long it may take for a child to progress through each different stage. Parents should also keep in mind that “Every child progresses at a difference pace”. Therefore, be patient and allow time for your child to absorb English at the beginning. Ms. Ali had discussions with parents about which stage their child is at currently and shared some effective ways for parents to teach their child English at home based on the child’s age, for example, set a routine for English learning, engage your child in role-play, use everyday situations and create a vocabulary journal.

We would like to thank Ms. Ali for hosting this workshop for our LIS community, and also to thank Ms. Heidi Peng and Mr. Paul McCarthy for taking care of our students in the guest lounge while their parents were attending the workshop. The younger students enjoyed their time by listening to stories read by Ms. Heidi, and our older students playing Lego and board games together. We also would like to thank the Léman Family Association and members of our admissions staff and facilities staff who came and supported the event. What a great afternoon!
