Year 2A’s Poetry Café

Year 2A would like to share with you our new IPC unit, Time Travelers, where we had to choose an event to celebrate, find out about its significance, plan the event, and celebrate the event. We decided to celebrate National Poetry Day to help inspire people to discover, read, enjoy, and share poems.

Once we decided on our event, we started planning for it. We learned background information about National Poetry Day. A group of students worked on designing the poster/sign. Another group of students went to the library to find some books on poetry. We had a class discussion where we shared ideas to go along with our theme “Poetry Café”. We chose the poems we planned on presenting.

On Thursday morning, we set up the classroom for our Poetry Café event. We covered the tables with black tablecloths. We used clear bottles as vases to hold our red carnations and placed one at each table. We posted our sign and set up poetry books for anyone who wanted to read some poetry. We played Disney piano collection music in the background. We turned off the lights and turned on a lamp. WE WERE READY!

We recited four poems: ‘All of Me’, ‘Hearts’, ‘Color Poem’, and ‘Jelly Beans’. We had a guest violinist (one of our own classmates) who did a fabulous job playing the violin. Ms. Chelsea read a poem named ‘Footsteps’. We enjoyed our snack as we discussed and reflected on our performance. We finished our event with a poetry activity that included reading the poem ‘The Little Birds’, building the poem, and writing the poem.
