Kilimanjaro Challenge

  • Kilimanjaro Challenge

We climbed to the top of Kilimanjaro! Not literally of course, but virtually through the Nord Anglia Global Campus Challenge! This challenge was introduced because at the moment it is hard for people to live life normally, all over the world people are stuck in their houses in quarantine, and so this challenge introduces a goal, a reason to keep up exercise and to make the short walks people are allowed to have more enjoyable.

Of course here in China life is starting to return to normal, but it was an opportunity for us to join a global challenge, to support and interact with the global school community. Just in our Léman teams, a few of the people in our groups are stuck overseas and are experiencing the lockdown of their countries and through this challenge we are able to support and work with them, even though they are stuck far away.

I was part of a team of 4 Grade 11s, called the Ducks, and we were the first Léman team to finish the Kilimanjaro climb. It was a tough challenge, we had to walk 93000 steps and 1900 floors to complete the challenge, and the mountain. We expected it to be extremely difficult, but actually we found we had completed the step goal in the first couple weeks, we did not realise how many steps we did even just walking around the house! The hardest part of the challenge was achieving the floors goal, even though many of us live in tall apartment buildings we all would usually take the elevator to get home. The majority of our steps came from being at school, all our classes are dotted around the floors, many of them are on the third floor, and to get to class we go up and down and up and down the floors. No elevator to provide an escape clause! This is how we achieved the floor goal for the challenge, and how we climbed the whole mountain! It was a fun and engaging challenge and we are very proud of our progress, and of all the teams in Léman who have worked really hard, we have all done very well.
