We have many exciting activities in MYP as we near the end of 2018. Teachers from the Chengdu area came together at Leman on November 21st for a job-a-like, where they shared ideas and best practices for teaching. Students have been working together in groups to do service activities in school and around the community. Some of the groups have focused on the environment, while others have focused on education. The G8 students led the World Children’s Day activities on November 20th, that included a power off day to raise awareness about cyberbullying and a walk-a-thon. Additionally, we will be having the winter concert in our last week of school before the winter holiday.
As we prepare for MYP authorization, our MYP consultant will be coming on Monday, Dec 10th and Tuesday, Dec 11th. We are looking for parents who may be interested in speaking with the consultant on Tuesday, Dec 11th at 2PM. As Mr. Brown mentioned above, we were so pleased to host over a 100 of our IB colleagues from around Chengdu to a gather here at Léman to share best practice and to connect within our different IB Diploma subject groups.
Léman will graduate our fourth IB Diploma class in 2019. All three past graduating classes have exceeding expectations in terms of their IB Diploma results achieving above the world average. While this is a tremendous accomplishment, we stress the importance of the “value added” approach to the IB Diploma. If students choose the most challenging programme of which they are capable, that is the true success story. Our goal is to help our students “exceed their former selves” and that means to grow. If they can leave our IB Diploma Programme, happier and more confident young people who truly care of the world in which they live and have the motivation and skills to take the action needed to make a difference, expectations have been, indeed, exceeded!
This current graduating class (2019) of five is in the midst of completing their Extended Essays (4000 words of original research) on topics ranging from determining the significance of protest movements and media in the ending of the Vietnam War, sleep patterns within varying age groups, Korean language use, linear velocity, angular velocity and trajectory on the table tennis ball and the effectiveness of Jimmy Carter’s human rights agenda.
Our current grade 11 Diploma class has 20 students and they will just begin their Extended Essay journey in January leading to their knowledge claim presentations in May that allow them to work on their essay drafts over the summer.
While our grade 12 students are hard at work on their Theory of Knowledge essays (worth 67% of their final grade), our grade 11 students are working on understanding the knowledge systems in mathematics under the direction of Mr. George who is co-teaching the course with me. We are lucky to have Mr. Rutherford, our maths teacher, actively supporting us by teaching lessons not just on mathematical concepts but on perspective in the arts using photography. See the pictures below from yesterday’s TOK class where our students were actively engaged in a kinaesthetic activity trying to disprove a mathematics theory.
Both groups are well underway with their mandatory CAS (Creativity, Activity and Service) programme led by Mrs. Pen stone who also leads our Duke of Edinburgh programme. The IB CAS programme requires the students to set goals in all three domains and to work on those goals, documenting their achievements with evidence and supervisor reflections. All of this is documented in our Managebac system that can be sent to the IB for inspection.
While are our grade 12 students have completed or will have completed university applications by the New Year (with destinations in Australia, Canada, Hong Kong, Singapore and the Netherlands), the grade 11’s are in the midst of research and finding best fits. We use the system called BridgeU (https://bridge-u.com/) to help students develop a profile of their strengths so they can find positive university matches. This system analyses trends to show students where jobs will be in the future in fields of their interest. We also use it as a platform for the university applications with a build in reference requests and personal statement/essay builder
One of the quality control mechanisms that the IB puts in place is an annual five-year programme review through a self-study. This is very much like the reflection process our students undertake and similar to the MYP authorization process we are following in grades 6-10. To that end, we would like to formally request current and former IB Diploma parents to volunteer to meet with me to review the IB philosophy. I will host a meeting in January but I would appreciate you emailing me if you are interested. I will reach out to parents as well.
