Nanjing is the capital of Jiangsu Province, which consistently leads China in terms of the amount of annual foreign investment.
The city is located 300km West of Shanghai on the Yangtze River, and being China’s largest inland port, it is a key junction for trade with vast and rapidly developing Western China. Nanjing is also a major rail link and has an international airport.
Having a smaller expatriate population than cities such as Shanghai and Beijing, Nanjing is an ideal place to live for people who enjoy a close-knit community, and who are looking for more of a real China experience. However, the city also has the conveniences of international supermarkets, shopping malls and restaurants.
Travel within Nanjing is easy, with affordable taxis and a modern metro system. In 2011, the new South Station opened. The station is 15 minutes by car from school and a hub for travel throughout China. The high-speed train takes just over an hour to Shanghai and less than 5 hours to Beijing.
Suzhou (China’s Venice) and other local cities are easily accessible by rail and other places - such as Xi’an (site of the terracotta warriors) and Chengdu (home to the best-known panda reserve) -can be reached easily on regular flights from Nanjing airport.
In short, Nanjing is an exciting and exotic city that offers a great experience in itself and as a gateway to China. Many of our staff, parents and pupils have enjoyed living in Nanjing for several years.
