James Tucker

James Tucker. Middle School at Country Day School

Middle School Principal

After studying Philosophy and Literature at Edinburgh University, I went from South East London with the Teach First program to two outstanding international schools in Santiago Chile; first as Head of Philosophy in The Grange school, then Middle School Principal at Santiago College. I have an MA in Philosophy and Literature from Edinburgh University, an MSc in Public Policy and Management from the University of London and this year I complete a certification in advanced educational leadership (CAEL) from Harvard Graduate School of Education (HGSE).

I have experience working in the British, IB and US systems, however, I believe that the essence of good teaching and learning remain the same regardless of the context or curriculum. All outstanding schools have high-expectations, rigour, a focus on character beyond academics and a lot of love and support. I have a particular interest in wellbeing, health education, and contemplative practices. As well as delivering a highly challenging academic curriculum it’s becoming increasingly important to teach students strategies they can use to manage their own state of mind and wellbeing.

Whilst living in Chile I met my wonderful wife Maria Eugenia and along came my Anglo-Chilean daughter, Lucy who is now nearly four years old. In 2019 (on my birthday, March 1st!) my son, Leon was born here in Costa Rica. So now we have light (Lucy) and the Lion King in our lives! I have been practicing meditation and Kung Fu for over 10 years and have a strong interest in politics, philosophy, and current affairs. I play the guitar (badly) and am a big fan of Pink Floyd.  We’re loving the lush green surroundings, beaches, and incredibly warm people here in Costa Rica; we feel so blessed and grateful to be able to bring up a family in this great country and wonderful school.
