Air Quality Management

As you are aware, Jakarta’s air quality has been particularly poor in recent months with levels more frequently deemed to be in the “unhealthy” range (as per the US AQI Index).  We are encouraged to know that so many parents share our concerns on this issue. We want to share our Clean Air Plan (attached) – effective from 2 September 2019 - and update you on the steps NAS Jakarta is taking to keep our students and staff as safe as possible.

We believe that air quality management has to be part of a bigger “green” agenda at NAS Jakarta where we consider how to lead more eco-friendly lives. Environmental education and conservation will be a big focus at the school over the coming year and we ask that parents work with us on this important agenda.

AQ Index and Protocols  for Indoor and Outdoor Learning

We are monitoring pollution levels on a regular basis during the course of each school day to determine whether it is safe to have outside activities for students and staff. For this term, our procedures will be guided by the data from the U.S Embassy air quality meter in South Jakarta. We will also be monitoring AQ levels collected from indoor AQ monitors at different locations within school and are taking advice on the most reliable devices on the market. You will find our detailed procedures in our Clean Air Plan (attached).

Knowledge Gathering and Sharing

We are working with other international schools in Jakarta, and within the Nord Anglia Educational family of schools, to share knowledge and best practice. We are also seeking input from specialists in the field to gain a greater understanding of the risks and guide our actions on air quality management at NAS Jakarta. For example, we are exploring: the best monitoring devices, the effectiveness of HEPA filters, as well as the impact and costs of air purifiers in classrooms. We are fortunate to have a wonderful campus with many plants and trees and will be adding more indoor and outdoor plants known for air purifying.

Environmental Policy and Action Plan

We will be working with students, parents and staff to develop an Environmental Policy and Action Plan for Nord Anglia School Jakarta. This policy will ensure that environmental awareness is at the forefront of our strategic planning as we develop as a school. A student Eco Committee will lead the school towards Eco School Accreditation which will challenge us - individually and collectively - to look at our practices in relation to energy, waste, water, transport, healthy living, environmental protection and global citizenship (including the UN Sustainable Development Goals).
