Early Years Curriculum

The NIS Early Years team provides an innovative and stimulating inquiry-based learning environment to help your child to flourish. We believe that every child is a unique individual who brings a wealth of ideas, opportunities and deep curiosity to our school.

Our teachers are trained in the Reggio Emilia inspired teaching philosophy, which is an inquiry based teaching approach. We do not enter our school year with set topics for our classes, but are led by the interests of the children. Sometimes there are several themes running at one time in our classrooms and these can last for days to months depending on the children’s interests and how deep we can take their learning.

Both the English and Dutch streams follow the Early Years Foundation Stage Curriculum and have phonics and mathematics program. Formal teaching of reading and writing does not take place until Kindergarten 2/Group 2 but, if your child is showing signs of readiness, they will have every opportunity to learn these skills. Our Early Years students also have access to the International Primary Curriculum (IPC) used in the Primary School, through shared projects with the older children, school-wide initiatives and whole school assemblies.

When you send your child to NIS, you will be an active participant in the educational journey. Teachers closely track each child's development to learn about children's interests and how best to provide a safe, yet challenging, environment for them to thrive. The journey we take together provides your child with a solid foundation from which they can confidently enter primary school as strong, capable and resilient students.
