The local areas surrounding NIS and around most expatriate areas have a number of indoor play centres and outdoor playgrounds where children can explore and play. In addition, many buildings and compounds in expatriate areas have dedicated facilities like pools and playgrounds for children.
Even a cursory look at Google Maps will reveal that there are very few green, open spaces in Jakarta. In cities like Sydney and Vancouver up to 30% of the urban environment is dedicate to outdoor areas. In Jakarta, this is less than 11%, including water reservoirs, which are not able to be used for any activities. In order to enjoy most outdoor activities it is necessary to travel outside of the city.
Across the weekends children are able to engage in weekend sports competitions and many families enjoy bike riding or hiking, as well as taking opportunities for cultural exploration. NIS is the greenest most tranquil campus in Jakarta, allowing space for children to learn and play in a safe and open environment.
