School Service

18 April 2014

One of the special things that we focus on at school is Service. It is part of what makes our school distinctive, it is something we are very proud of and which we can see having a tremendous impact on our students and our community.

Service is the term we use for the different ways in which we help other people, and by helping other people in turn we help ourselves. The Service programme develops skills and attributes in students which are not part of a standard curriculum. It helps students to grow up having the right kind of values and characteristics to make a meaningful contribution to society in the future, wherever they may live in the world.

An ongoing Service activity involves our work with local migrant schools: schools for the children of people who have travelled into Shanghai to work. Each Wednesday, groups of students from the two local migrant schools, Wan Liao and Kangqiao, visit BISS Pudong and work with our students. They undertake a wide variety of activities which include language workshops, sports, and arts and crafts. Our students play an amazing role in working with eachother and with these visiting students. The learning is not just in one direction and we see all students involved developing as part of these activities.

We expect students from right across the school to undertake Service activities every term. This can be within school, perhaps by helping others to learn to read, it can be working with others in the community, such as the migrant schools, or it can be through their own efforts in raising money for our partner projects. One very recent example is the Jinqiao run where people from all parts of our community run together and raise funds to support Heart to Heart. I thank and congratulate everyone who supported this event, and particularly those parents and members of staff who helped with all the organisation behind the scenes.

Service is a major part of our school and will continue to grow. Young people who receive an education at BISS Pudong will grow up to be socially responsible global citizens of whom we can all be very proud.
