Information and Reminders
Thank you to all of the parents who have found the time to come and read with our children in school. The classes are all very excited to meet you and show you what they are capable of! If you would like to volunteer your time, please contact your child's class teacher and we can find a date which is suitable.
Next week will be a four-day week, there will be no school on Friday (11/11) and on the following Monday (14/11). Your child will have a project to complete over this longer weekend based around the Roman circus.
Please could you also send a white bed sheet to school with your child for next Wednesday (9/11) for our Roman Circus Day. The children will take part as gladiators, chariot racers and they will also make the sort of food which Roman's ate hundreds of years ago. If you have any questions regarding this, please contact your child's class teacher.

We have a very exciting week planned for the children! We will be travelling back in time to learn about the Circus Maximus, or the Roman circus. The children will transform into daring chariot racers, brave gladiators and talented chefs to recreate the chaos and excitement of the Circus Maximus. As the children learn about the circuses of the past, they will prepare themselves to write a recount encompassing both what they have learnt and how circuses have changed over the last two thousand years! All-in-all a very hands-on, practical historical learning experience!
Please share this Horrible Histories video at home with your child and share facts about the Romans and their circus:

Maths
The focus in Maths next week will continue to be on calculation. We will look at addition and subtraction as inverse operations of one another so, for example, do the children understand that 3+4=7 and 7-4=3? If you would like to help your child at home, please follow this link:

Topic
Next week, Year 1 will become historians; learning all about the Circus Maximus and this unique form of Roman entertainment. The children will research the circus by reading books and looking at YouTube videos. They will make their own golden laurels and togas and will learn how to be chariot racers and gladiators. They will also make their own Roman pancakes to eat at the Circus Maximus on Wednesday! The children will then write a recount on Thursday about their Roman Circus Day using the historical knowledge which they will have acquired.
