IB News - 19 February

18 February 2016

I hope you all had a relaxing and fun-filled Chinese New Year break and it was good to see the students return to school this week looking refreshed and reinvigorated.  For Year 13, they return to the TOK essay deadline which is today and signifies another key milestone in terms of gaining their IB Diploma.  Our Year 12s will all have had meetings now with their Extended Essay supervisors and should be well on their way to having read the assessment criteria and honing their research questions.

  • IB assembly

Before the holiday, we were treated to a special Chinese New Year assembly arranged by Shu Laoshi and members of the Kang Qiao Migrant School.  The assembly was expertly presented and led by Ashley Fung who helped furnish us with a real glimpse into the many traditions and customs surrounding Chinese New Year. It was great to see so many Year 12 and 13 students taking part and adding to their CAS portfolios in such a cultural way in addition to another impressive performance from the IB choir.

This Tuesday saw another IB Assembly with a fascinating talk from Mrs Platt on TOK in Science where she highlighted the fact that everything in science can be disproved and what we are learning today will most likely be disproved in the future. Sebastian Arguedas also introduced the IB students to our Global Engage challenge of the month. With Linguistic Diversity as the key focus of March, Sammi, Mathilde and Sebastian have devised a competition for IB students to raise awareness of International Mother Language Day in which all students contribute a phrase in their mother tongue to a quiz.  Prizes will be awarded at the next assembly.

It was also a pleasure to see Mathilde Venet, Hilary Lee, Kiesha-Marie Chong, Kavye Subramanian, Ashley Fung, Diether Arias receive their certificates for taking part in the MUN competition at Concordia.

Congratulations finally go to Lucia Cabot who entered into a competition to receive a place on the IEU Young Leadership Summer Program 2016 at IE University in Madrid.  She has been selected from many to receive a place on this prestigious course and gain some valuable leadership experience.

Summer Performing Arts Camp with Juilliard

Applications are now open for the 2016 Summer Performing Arts Summer Programme with Juilliard.  The programme, taking place from July 9-22 at our Nord Anglia Education school in Geneva, is a unique opportunity for children to enjoy one-to-one sessions along with group lessons with Juilliard artists and guests.  For more details and to register interest click here.

View from the classroom

Here are some snapshots of what has been going on in the classroom over the past fortnight for our IB students.

Year 12 Chinese B HL students just had an amazing debate on 'Should we protect privacy on the internet or not?' after doing research on Edward Snowden. Each student found appropriate arguments to support his/her side and express his/her opinion clearly and logically. Everyone got quite passionate in the debate.

The Year 12 German students continue with their topic of 'Gesundheit' (health) and they have all created and submitted a German leaflet full of tips and tricks for a healthy lifestyle through the winter.

Year 13 Maths HL students are continuing on with their course and working on their internal assessments, the students in higher level Maths have begun their preparation for the final exam. This week students received a bulky pack providing them with one question a day to complete between now and the end of the year. Of particular focus are the weekend questions, where students are expected to focus on the dreaded long form Section B questions.

Y12 Physics,  Mr Howell’s set are continuing their Astrophysics option unit this week and have been looking at the characteristics of stars and what we can calculate by analyzing the light emitted from them.

Year 12 Biology students have been using statistical analysis techniques to determine if the variation they observed in a population is due to chance or another factor.

Year 13 Biology students have been looking at how species evolve and modelled this using the example of furry and furless rabbits in the Scottish countryside.
