5C - Jia Hui Yin for persistent hard work in all subjects

5D - Ollie for demonstrating excellent enquiry skills during topic lessons which has assisted a great piece of homework

Next week we will be continuing our Space Explorers topic and using our science learning as a stimulus for our writing. We will be using our research skills to find out about the life cycle of a star. We will then present this information as an information flow diagram, ensuring that we have cohesion within and between paragraphs. We will be turning this into a video with the written explanations performed as a voice over. During the latter part of the week, we will be looking at constellations and their history. We will draw on our previous understanding of Greek mythology and characters, and will predict the stories that the Greeks may have used to explain each constellation.

Next week in Maths the children will begin by reinforcing their understanding of fractions. Comparing as well as identifying denominators that are multiples of the same number will be a focus. Moving on to recognising mixed numbers and improper fractions will show that numerators can be larger than denominators. The children will also read and write decimals as fractions which will be followed by using thousandths in relation to tenths, hundredths and equivalent decimals. To finish the week, the children will round decimals with two decimal places to the nearest whole number and to one decimal place.

Next week in topic, the children will be enforcing their international mindedness by participating in International Week. Year 5 will focus primarily on countries from Europe and will experience different activities linked to specific countries. Some of the activities will be: designing a Scottish tartan and looking at traditional Scottish dress, making a Greek dish and learning about traditional Greek food, learning about famous Spanish artists and practising a traditional Irish dance. The children will also work on the current topic ‘Space Explorers’ and continue their quest to discover more information about the planets and stars within our Solar System.
