As the weather gets warmer, please remind children of the importance of staying safe in the sun. We encourage all children to wear a suitable sun hat at break times, and if you would like to apply sun cream before they arrive at school, please feel free to do so.

In English, we will continue to read ‘The Firework Maker’s Daughter’ by Phillip Pullman. The children will be asked to summarise the story, showing their understanding of it by only selecting the most relevant events to the story to record. They will then continue to improve their story-writing skills by planning and writing a story based on the book. They will develop their skills in using adjectives, noun phrases and adverbial phrases to describe a character and setting in a story.

In guided reading, we will focus on using a range of reading strategies to help the children decode and understand tricky words.

In spelling, we will identify and spell words with the /sh/ sound spelt /ch/ (e.g. chef, chalet, machine, brochure).

In Maths next week, we will revisit addition and subtraction strategies. The children will consolidate their understanding of using mental strategies for addition and subtraction, before moving on to formal written methods. They will be asked to demonstrate their skills in using column addition and subtraction and, for those children already confident in using these methods, the focus will be on using inverse operations to calculate sums and solve problems.

Next week we will hold the entry point for our new topic, ‘Bright Sparks!’ As you know, this week your child received a homework task inviting them to prepare a dance/movement to perform to the class next week. We will then move to the Auditorium where the best performances in each year group will perform to the whole of Year 3 under some very funky lights! We hope this will ignite the children’s interest in the unit of work and generate some interesting questions during our knowledge harvest. Stay tuned!
