This was followed by a jigsaw activity which involved the students being given an exemplar speech which was cut up into different pieces and placed in a random order. The students had to work in small groups to re-assemble the speech so that it followed a cohesive and fluent format.
The groups then placed their completed jigsaws next to each other and discussed similarities and differences before being shown the original speech. Any changes were noted and made.
Following this, they analysed the speech to identify different components and to determine how it could be used as a template for their own speeches. This was followed by an analysis of the persuasive/rhetorical devices that were used.
Once the template was created, they were given the task of writing and preparing their own speeches – to be delivered next week. They then created a set of success criteria so that they could use peer and self-assessment before submitting their work.
