Perfect Score!

It’s no mean feat to score a perfect set of ten A* Grades in the IGCSE, but BISS Pudong student Aidan Wong has done just that!

Now in Year 12, 16-year-old Aidan’s initial results, released over the summer, included two A Grades; however a remark revealed some errors in the marking, and those two were upgraded to A* Grades.

Recent GCSE statistics show that less than one percent of students can claim this rare achievement, and we are very proud of Aidan’s dedication to achieve academic excellence. He is a wonderful role model for other students.

BISS Pudong Principal Patrick Horne says, “Aidan will be tremendously proud of this achievement and a set of grades which very few achieve. He has, of course, had great support from his family and from his teachers but ultimately these are Aidan’s grades and are a true testament to his commitment to his studies.”

Aidan agrees it was hard work that earned his rewards. He explains, “I revised quite a bit. I did summaries for every chapter and nine past papers for every subject. I had read online that that was the minimum required to get good grades!”

However there was a small hiccup in his preparations for the IGCSE exams when, less than two months before they were due, he was hospitalised with appendicitis and underwent surgery. Support from his teachers ensured the medical drama didn’t adversely affect his schedule, as they provided him with all the materials he missed in class and, most importantly, their passion for their work. He says, “They (the teachers) identified my strengths and weaknesses to work on. And they were very passionate about their subjects.” He continues, “I was also lucky to have parents who can help me in my subjects. If I couldn’t understand something, they were always there to help.”

According to Carol Camargo, Director of Curriculum and Assessment at BISS Pudong, last year’s IGCSE results were very positive. She says, “We saw an increase this year in A-A* Grades with this cohort of IGCSE students, and particularly good results in some subjects. Our Drama students all recorded A-A* results.”

Indeed, 45% of our IGCSE students in 2014 achieved A-A* grades, compared with 21% in England.

Aidan has set his sights high for the International Baccalaureate which he commenced in August, aiming for a repeat of the perfect score. “I know for Sydney University Medical School, which is the university I want to go to, to get straight into Medicine you need a perfect 45 score in IB,” he explains. He continues, “I’m aiming to get a 7 in every single subject!”
