Learning at our Early Years Foundation Stage
The Early Years Foundation Stage includes seven areas of learning. These include three Prime Areas:
The Prime Areas underpins learning in all other areas and helps children to develop skills in the following four Specific areas:
Children work towards the Early Learning Goals in the seven areas of learning whilst being closely supported and challenged along the way. Readiness and flexibility are therefore key considerations in the planning of effective and differentiated teaching strategies.
Play to Learn - Learn to Play
Children in the Early Years Foundation Stage learn by playing and exploring, being active and through creative and critical thinking. Each activity is adapted to suit your child’s unique needs and interests to provide them with a strong foundation for their education. We encourage your child to develop their imagination, to get actively involved in learning and to make decisions. Our timetables are set up to allow long periods of uninterrupted play since this is when we know children can explore concepts at a deeper level.
As your child moves into Key stage 1 they will continue to experience some play based learning as they will be introduced to our more formal curriculum so that they can begin to understand their learning in more depth.
A Purpose-Built Learning Environment
Our Early Years Unit provides a warm and welcoming meeting point within our community, where you can gently introduce your child into the school environment. Within this purpose-built, child-centred learning environment, our youngest students will develop a strong foundation for lifelong learning, as they are encouraged to explore their new surroundings and lead their learning.
Our Early Years Unit invites imagination with innovative learning spaces in both the indoor and outdoor classrooms. It allows children the freedom to grow independently with a cycle track, dedicated playgrounds, climbing apparatus and many open-ended, large-scale resources. As they develop confidence in their surroundings, there are opportunities for them to use other facilities within the school with access to a large library, music rooms, a Maker Space, a sports hall and a swimming pool.
Why choose Nord Anglia International School, Pudong for your child’s Early Years education?
Personalised Learning Environment
Personalised learning is at the heart of NAIS Pudong. We treat your child as an individual by adapting to their personal learning preferences, strengths and areas for growth. We focus on how your child develops; we recognise that every child is different, but should be treated equally. Your child's teacher will plan personalised, engaging and inspiring learning experiences to allow your child to develop their interests and meet the curriculum objectives for their age.
The entire building is designed to extend learning in all the prime and specific areas to encourage our youngest students to develop as independent learners. It signifies our commitment to providing a school environment that is nurturing, academically-stimulating and focused on developing the individual talents and strengths of each child.
A Caring Educational Environment
Our Early Years provides a nurturing and secure setting for your child to confidently explore and challenge themselves. We ensure that inside and outside spaces are safe, interesting and engaging. We support children working as a team to help them succeed.
In Early Years children need to learn about risks and safety, how to make good choices and how to respect boundaries. We provide opportunities for your child to do this and we achieve this by ensuring their physical and emotional needs are met during their time in our Early Years setting.
Our Highly Qualified Teachers
Our highly trained academic staff are committed to instilling a genuine love of learning within each child. At NAIS Pudong this is achieved through the free use of art, craft, music and language in conjunction with the teaching of academics, so learning becomes a compelling creative process.
Each experienced teacher, supported by our dedicated team of teaching assistants, will create opportunities for your child to develop across all 7 areas of the Early Years Foundation Stage Framework, offering open-ended learning and opportunities for child-initiated projects.
Teachers enhance play in the moment by adding resources, by joining in play and by modelling language. Our teachers take time to understand what your child is interested in and how children are playing together before joining. They also strive not to direct the play but to empower your child by letting them lead. There is a strong emphasis on social and emotional development as a means by which children develop qualities and skills such as self-confidence, independence and problem solving.
Our Parent-Teacher Relationship
At NAIS Pudong, we recognise that you are the most important person in your child's life. We value the importance of effective communication and the sharing of your child's learning. We use an online learning journal called Evidence Me which is specifically designed to share progress in EYFS. Your child's teacher will update your child’s journal with photos, videos and observation notes allowing you to see the exciting things that your child is learning on a day-to-day basis.
We also invite you to take part in various activities throughout the year, including coffee mornings, celebrations, activity days and much more.
Our overall aim is to enhance the parent partnership which is so important during this phase of your child’s development.
A Foundation for Future Success
We recognise that in order for our students to achieve the world-class results that they do at IGCSE and IBDP in the Secondary school, it is essential that the foundations for learning in the early years are secure and that personal progression is consistently monitored.
We therefore aim to provide our early years children with the academic knowledge and practical skills they need to become successful life-long learners, providing your child with a smooth transition from Early Years and Key Stage 1 through to Primary and then Secondary level education.
We invite you to come and visit our school, to experience first-hand all that makes NAIS Pudong special.
